Leaving a gift to MADDA in your Will is more than just a donation – you are helping us effect real change in reducing the devastating impact of asbestos, and providing critical support to those affected. Support that you may have been grateful to receive yourself.
A bequest is a powerful legacy that will continue to influence lives long after you’re gone. By including MADDA in your estate planning, you play a vital role in our mission, contributing to a future where asbestos-related diseases no longer claim 4,000 Australian lives every year.
Writing a Will gives us all a moment to reflect on the past and think about what we want our legacy to look like. In our End-of-Life-Planning guide - the fifth booklet in The Hope Companion - we provide comprehensive information about the documents, processes, agreements, and decisions that need to be considered. This is the fifth booklet in The Hope Companion, our support resource for people affected by mesothelioma.
On average, one person dies every 12 hours in Australia from mesothelioma. Our work to combat this silent killer is far from over. As a community-funded organisation that receives no government funding, we’ve been grateful to have helped so many West Australians affected by this disease.
"MADDA does not charge for the support they give but what they have given me is priceless. They gave me back some hope."
– Brigitte, Client
Your bequest ensures that we can continue offering free support to those affected by asbestos-related illnesses, just as we have done since our humble beginnings in 2012, when we hosted our first morning tea in our Founders’ home.
Western Australia has some of the highest rates of mesothelioma in the world – an aggressive terminal cancer caused by asbestos. Your legacy will also help us to continue raising awareness about the dangers of asbestos, sparking important conversations and funding programs and training that could save lives.
We have provided guidance on how to leave a bequest and recommend seeking professional legal advice to ensure your wishes are accurately reflected in your Will. There are several ways you can include a gift to MADDA in your Will:
This is the remainder of your estate after all other bequests, expenses, and debts have been fulfilled. You can choose to leave the entire residue or a percentage of it.
This is a specific sum of money.
You may choose to bequeath a particular asset of value, such as property, shares, jewellery, or works of art.
Suggested wording for your Will. There should be a section in your Will for you to document your bequests. Below is an example of the wording you might use to ensure your gift is directed as you intend:
“I give and bequeath to Mesothelioma and Dust Diseases Australia Ltd (ABN 57 605 192 710)”
(choose one of the following)
The residue of my estate
__________% of the residue of my estate
The sum of $__________
__________ (Details of specific item/asset – such as shares or property)
This gift is for general purposes, free of all duties, and I direct that a receipt from an authorised officer of Mesothelioma and Dust Diseases Australia Ltd will be sufficient discharge to my Executors and Trustees.”

Meeting with Lizz from MADDA made me feel so much better. She has reassured me; I can cope with the journey I have ahead.
My advice for anyone who has been diagnosed with Mesothelioma is to get in contact with MADDA. They can really help you and your loved ones navigate this exceedingly challenging time.
…it’s reassuring to know that MADDA can step in and help bridge the gap between clinical services and the psychosocial aspects of the disease by offering time, understanding and support to the whole family based on their own personal experience. I’m grateful for all the support the team provide my patients.
