Mesothelioma Patients

Specialist support when you need it

When you or someone close to you is diagnosed with mesothelioma, it can be overwhelming. The shock of being diagnosed with an incurable cancer with no long-term treatment is not easy for anyone, regardless of circumstances. It is normal to feel angry, alone, empty or scared, particularly if the diagnosis is accompanied by acute illness and/or hospitalization.

Our team at MADDA have unique experience and understanding of the challenge of being faced with such a diagnosis and rest assured we can help you still find joy along the way.

A supportive team

We understand the difficulties of living with and caring for loved ones with mesothelioma.

We understand how bleak the diagnosis can feel and just how difficult those early days and weeks can be. Our support team have lived experience of mesothelioma and are here to support and walk beside you on this journey.

Not only do we provide ongoing emotional support, we also provide care navigation and can help answer or direct your questions. We can help with navigation of the different services available and maintaining quality of life.

About our services

All support services are free of charge, and we do not require contracts, memberships or exclusivity. Our team at MADDA have unique experience and understanding of the challenge of being faced with such a diagnosis, and the difficulties of adjusting to this new reality, for those living with mesothelioma and those caring for them.

We are generally contactable during business hours (WA time) and endeavour to respond to your enquiry within 48 hours, being mindful of weekends.

Our support network

Our Support Nurse Coordinator and her team provide a personal point of contact for you and your carer’s, helping to adjust to your new normal and transition through stages of care along your journey, linking you to appropriate services at the right time. Additionally, we offer:

  • In-person support groups throughout the Perth metropolitan area
  • Phone support and assistance to connect to other support networks across Australia
  • Assistance to understand medical information
  • Connections with others living with mesothelioma and their care supporters
  • Face-to-face nonclinical support (WA Metro only) at a place convenient to you
  • A private Facebook support group
  • Advice on telling others about your diagnosis
  • Assistance to discuss and plan future health, financial and care needs and wishes
  • Provision of information about preparing for end-of-life care
  • Referral to free legal advice regarding potential compensation

Peer support

Connecting with others that have been on a similar journey to you can help reduce uncertainty and provide helpful insights.

Support groups may not be for everyone, however you may find value in speaking with others going through the same journey as you. Peer support groups can be particularly helpful for those diagnosed with a rare cancer like mesothelioma. Other services may not always provide relevant support.

Our support groups are available in a range of formats, including face to face meetings, online chat forums, and private Facebook groups. We provide a group for patients and their carers and a separate group for bereaved carers. Most sessions are informal and offer a chance to connect with others over coffee, cake and conversation. All groups are facilitated to help maintain a safe and respectful space for all participants.

To join a MADDA support group, contact our Support Nurse Coordinator, Lizz or request access via our private Facebook groups. Contact Lizz at – support@madda.org.au
