Mesothelioma Treatment

Mesothelioma treatment options

While mesothelioma currently has no cure, there are life extending treatment options available to keep you well for longer.  Treatment options vary based on the type of mesothelioma, the extent of growth or spread, and your general health.

Whether you have early-stage or advanced mesothelioma, your medical team will discuss treatment options outlining the benefits and side effects. It is important the patient is well informed and remains in control of the decision making process.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy enhances the body’s immune response to fight cancer cells.  Substances made by the body or in a laboratory help boost or restore the body’s natural defenses against cancer.

It can be administered orally or intravenously.  Chemo can be a treatment option for early-stage or advanced disease, and may be used in conjunction with surgery.es against cancer.

Radiotherapy

Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to target and destroy cancer cells.  It’s often used to ease symptoms and slow progression of the disease.

Surgery

There may be surgical options available where cancerous tissue is removed.  However, this is generally only considered for peritoneal mesothelioma.

Pleurodesis

Pleurodesis is a treatment that aims to alleviate fluid collection (pleural effusion) that can make breathing difficult.

Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy involves using drugs or other substances to specifically target and attack cancer cells.  Unlike chemotherapy or radiotherapy, targeted therapy aims to cause less harm to normal cells in the body.

Clinical Trials

Clinical trials offer innovative and experimental therapies that may not be widely available.  Participating in a trial can involve receiving a new treatment, however not all patients are suitable candidates for a trial.

Palliative Care

Palliative care is designed to enhance your overall quality of life by addressing symptoms, nutrition, and offering both physical and emotional support.
