Peter Franklin is an occupational and environmental epidemiologist with a strong research interest in both occupational and non-occupational exposure to asbestos. He is the Director of the Occupational Respiratory Epidemiology (ORE) research group at the School of Population and Global Health, UWA.
This research group has a long history in asbestos research, particularly on the former miners of the Wittenoom blue asbestos mines and ex-residents of the town of Wittenoom.
The ORE group has also undertaken research into the epidemiology of mesothelioma in WA, including mesothelioma in home renovators and Aboriginal people, and established the Asbestos Review Program (ARP), a health surveillance program for people who have had significant occupational exposure to asbestos.
Peter was a Scientific and Policy Officer at the WA Department of Health, where he was involved in updating the Public Health Asbestos Regulations, as well as providing advice to local governments and general community on asbestos issues. He was also a member of the Research Committee of the Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency (ASSEA) and is a current member of the National Registry Operations Advisory Group for the National Occupational Respiratory Disease Registry
